Life IS Busy. But God IS Good.

Isn't Spring just a beautiful season! These warm, sunny, delightful days are flying by though, and opportunities to blog have passed also. I have meant to keep my blog updated more; but sorry people, there are actually more important things to do! ;)

We had a couple of months of sickness...children with tonsillitis, chesty colds, and Jonathan was/is teething. Day after day went past, in which I nearly felt sure that the crying and grumpiness just would not end! It can be so difficult to get housework done with a 1 year old hitching a ride on your left hip (rubbing his runny nose and teary eyes across your clean blouse), and a two year old lying on the grass outside screaming asking for 'more water?' in his bucket of dirt. Dishes, and washing, and ironing, and toddler beds needing sheets straightened, and a highchair needing cornflakes wiped off, and bathrooms calling out my name.

Clean Me!
On those days, I try to forget about the extras. Such as the filing cabinet that needs re-organising; the bags of books from friends, that need sorting and placing on bookshelves; and the veggie garden that needs planting, etc. Because otherwise it can become very overwhelming. I remind myself that this is THE NORMAL. Life will always be busy...in different ways, yes, but certainly still busy. I need to learn how to utilize my time around the Lord, first and foremost, and then my hubby and boys. They need to come first. I am learning day by day to take time to enjoy my husband and sons; actually spend time with the people I love; enjoy little things like the new buds on the silver birch; praise the Lord for His goodness in every thing; and calmly keep carrying on with the housework. By God's grace, accomplishing something each day; even if it is "only" playing ball with Joshua and hearing him giggle as Mummy tries to chase him. But usually {I can be thankful} I am able to keep up with the basic housework, cooking and washing. And every so often, as a bonus, I achieve another 'to-do' item, as well!!

Anyhow we have all been well for several weeks now,
and the boys are playing a lot more happily! As I said in the title
- Life IS Busy. But God IS Good.
And He blesses me in more ways than I can number.

New growth on our Silver Birch

Here are just a few things that I am grateful for, in this busy season of motherhood:
~ a wonderful man who helps out so much and is so considerate.
~ sisters popping around..'just to help out for an hour before dinner'
~ my mum's encouragement
~ the book "One Thousand Gifts" by Ann Voskamp,
...which I am slowly getting through in my spare time ;) !
~ bright cheery days, meaning the boys get outside and play happily for sometime
~ a friend nearby, who has 2 little boys and understands because she is also very busy

I love my little family so much. I have done a series of catch up photo posts.

To finish off, I wonder if you would be willing to leave a comment in response
to one or all of the following questions? Thank You!

~ How do YOU make spending time with the Lord, a priority?

~ What are some practical helps for juggling the housework
and little children who need you to hold them in your arms?

~ What things are YOU grateful for in your busy life?

  1. Beth, I can so relate! I have been there! It seems like you are doing the most important things already.. the rest can wait. As an older sister in Christ, I just want to tell you that when you are my age- 58- that you will look back and wonder where those years went. And you will discover, like me, that those years were the best of your life! So keep on keeping on as you are doing, and cherish all the moments- good and bad- they will become the best and clearest memories in time to come! Blessings, Glenys

  3. Hi Beth,
I can totally relate to being busy and sometimes feeling overwhelmed by all the tasks that seem to need attention all at once!
With my littlest now 13 weeks old, life day to day is still somewhat unpredictable...I've just begun a new weekly schedule/plan including all my chores as well as time to spend just reading to and being with the little ones (of course I spend time with them at other times too as they can tag along/help with the chores). I've allotted time slots in the morning to get all the things done that I need to do. For example: 7am get children up and dressed, 7.45 breakfast, and I find that just having the list to go back to after each task is completed is enough to keep things going smoothly most of the time, rather than what I was doing before which was trying to mentally work out what needed doing, and trying to do it ALL at once!
This way I also know that if the dusting doesn't get done today, it is scheduled for this time next week, so it can be done then. Of course, it's only possible to follow these things loosely when there are little people to care for, but I'm finding it helpful...
Sorry for such a long comment.
BTW, thank you for the parcel, it was lovely! :) Sorry I haven't mailed a proper note yet.

  4. Lovely post Beth!
Yes it is so true. Life with small children is always full and busy!
For me, staying in constant communion with the Lord is key. I'm not always diligent (and therefore do not want to imply that I am super holy or anything), but constantly seeking to have communication lines open with Him is like water to my soul. My favorite passage of Scripture is Jeremiah 17:7-8. It paints a beautiful picture of a flourishing tree in any and every season. Why does it always flourish? Because it sends out its roots by the stream. So my hearts aim is to do that in my everyday, so that whatever comes, I will be fruitful & well nourished. Practically that looks like me having an open stance that is open & receptive to the Holy Spirit in the morning. Other stuff, including having regular Bible reading (I am ashamed to admit) comes and goes in consistency. But having an open stance of constant communion is like my bread & water for keeping me alive. Usually I will find that He will draw Scripture from my heart in the right times and as I go about my day allow me to meditate deeper on it. So I am so grateful for the season before children when consistency in God's Word was uninterrupted and allowed for a fountain which I can now draw upon despite not having pages open.
Goodness gracious, I was going to have a go at answering all three, but it looks like number one (which isnt even complete) has taken too long!
Blessings Beth. You're doing an amazing job!

  5. Thank you all for your encouraging comments!

Mrs Glenys Hicks - Thanks for the reminder to cherish the moments!

Jess – I’m glad this post was encouraging for you! I’m just trying to think of ‘which’ Jess you may be?! =)

Andrea H. – Thank You! You have given me incentive again...to start using the weekly schedule that I’d made a couple of months ago! I think I gave up on it when the boys were sick. :/ I can’t believe D. Is 13 weeks old. Wow! We really need to see you before he gets too much older!

Jo – I really love that passage too. Thanks for the encouragement to seek constant communion with the Lord. It is something that I don’t always ‘allow’ sadly, because I end up crowding my mind with the cares of this life. So again, another wonderful reminder!

    Love Beth

  6. This was a great post, Beth - and well worth waiting for! I know what it's like to be really busy... But it is best to be busy with family, than busy with something that takes us away from our family!! :)
Don't worry about the cleaning when you have a child who needs to be held for awhile - the cleaning will wait... children don't - they grow up before you know it. The years have flown by since my children were born and I regret some of the times when I was so busy DOING and cleaning and being busy that I didn't stop and cherish my family.

As for spending time with the Lord - getting up a few minutes earlier, snatching quiet moments through the day, and spending quiet time in the evenings after the children are in bed is how I manage to get time with Him. Sometimes if they're playing well, I take time during the day, and I think that is both important and good because children soak all those things in and if they see Mummy reading the Bible and spending time with the Lord, they will learn better that our relationship with Him is for ANY time of the day! :)

As for what I'm grateful for - my children, my husband, our garden, and encouragingly sincere blogging friends are just a few of the things I'm thankful and grateful for! :)

  7. Clara - thank you! Your encouragement about finding time throughout the day to seek the Lord and His Word was good. And particularly about setting an example to our children. How true. Hope you are all well. Love Beth
